The Truth About Supplements for Healthy Skin

Let me tell you a quick story. You may be taking nutritional supplements for healthy skin, but have you thought about applying those nutrients directly to your face and body. Imagine everything that those vitamins must go through before they make it to the dermis.

They go through the digestive system and enter the bloodstream. Some of them get stored in the liver. Others go to support vital organs. When they final do make it to the dermis, it takes a process called diffusion to get those nutrients to the epidermis and those are the layers that we see. Applying them directly means that the nutrients will get to the place that you want them.

Everyone should use a nourishing moisturizer every day after they bathe, but most of the lotions and creams that you see on the market are not actually moisturizing. They don’t contribute to the skin’s health. They actually detract from it. In a moment, I’ll tell you about some of the ingredients to look for and those to avoid. But, first, I just want to mention that taking dietary supplements for healthy skin is a worthwhile step.

If the supplement contains the right nutrients, it will benefit the whole body. It’s nearly impossible to get all of the vitamins, minerals, amino acids and other nutrients that you need every day through diet alone. Just be selective when you go shopping for a supplement. Check out the manufacturer. Make sure that they use all natural ingredients and test each raw ingredient for purity. That’s important whether you are taking the supplement by mouth or applying it to your face.

All of those chemicals that cosmetic companies use in their lotions and creams penetrate through the skin’s layers and enter the bloodstream. That’s not good for your appearance or the health of your body.

Most of the ingredients to look for in a moisturizer are just like what you would find in supplements for healthy skin. The best choices are extracts from plants and other natural sources that contain vitamin E, essential fatty acids, vitamin A, potassium, calcium, sodium, protein fragments and coenzyme Q10.

The ingredients to avoid include petrolatum, mineral oil and paraffin wax, because they are not moisturizers. They are basically cheap fillers that are not beneficial to the skin’s health in any way. Other ingredients to avoid include artificial preservatives and added fragrances, because they are the most likely causes of adverse and allergic reactions. There are many other ingredients to avoid, as well, but if you only use all-natural products, you should be safe.

Coenzyme Q10 may be one of the most important supplements for healthy skin. Research has shown that it is the first antioxidant that is depleted when we are exposed to UV rays from the sun. Those UV rays do all kinds of damage without COQ10.

Make no mistake about it. If it is not properly formulated, the nutrient will not be able to penetrate into the skin’s cells.
